Joan Laporta Estruch has become the new president of FC Barcelona after the elections this Sunday in Catalonia. Eleven years after the end of his term, he is back to his old post.

He was the big favorite in this election, and the socios have made their choice. Joan Laporta Estruch is back as president of FC Barcelona and has beaten his two competitors, Victor Font and Toni Freixa.

With 93.59% of the counted ballots, Joan Laporta won 57.61% of the votes (26,852 votes), against 34.75% for Victor Font (14,799 votes) and 9.3% (4,385 votes) for Toni Freixa. The rest of the ballots were blank or blank.

The other two candidates could not create a surprise. Already president of FC Barcelona between 2003 and 2010, he took up the torch a few months after the announcement of the resignation of Josep María Bartomeu.

Since the announcement of his candidacy, Laporta had quickly established himself as the big favorite of this election, and had presented more than 10,000 signatures to validate his candidacy. And the socios have not changed their opinion since.

The great challenges of Laporta

This will therefore be his second adventure as president of FC Barcelona. By the time he was in charge of Barca, the club had won two Ligas and two Champions Leagues.

Joan Laporta and his management committee will replace that of Carles Tusquets, who had taken control of the club pending the elections since the departure of Josep María Bartomeu.

After several dark months at an institutional level as a sportsman, Barça is entering a new era. Laporta is expected to face difficult challenges in the coming years, and rebuild an institution that has suffered well lately.

In addition to managing a critical economic situation, and a very high payroll, the new Blaugrana management will have to build a sustainable sports project to restore the club’s image in Europe, and revolutionize its workforce to get their hands on the trophy that is always dreaming of. Barça: the Champions League.
